Food

Everyone should have access to great-tasting, healthy food that is kind to the planet and animals. Key is recognising the vital importance of farmers ensuring that they are paid fairly and not tied up in red tape and burdened by taxes.

The Peoples Party must:
champion British farmers. It is vital that we grow food and that farmers make a decent profit to sustain their businesses and reward their hard work
encourage farmers to do what they do best; the production of tasty, high-quality, wholesome and health-promoting foodstuffs
recognise that food security is a key element of national security. Sustainable farming means that consumers and supermarkets have to be in a position to pay higher prices to cover the true cost of farming in the UK
eliminate red tape, bureaucracy, and planning rules to encourage diversification
through rejoining the EU, re-establish import and export food supply chains and markets
establish measures for maintaining wildlife habitats, encouraging the reintroduction of hedgerows and the growing of trees
ban factory farming and any other farming method that exploits animals
ban the killing of animals without stunning
encourage new technologies to modernise farming including vertical farming and robotic weeding
encourage and support the production of alternatives to animal-based foods
minimise the waste of unwanted food
tackle the scourge of obesity with decisive action on fattening foods
ban industrial fishing and stop inhumane fishing practices
encourage developing economies to export agricultural produce to the UK in eco-friendly ways

Good food is vital to our health. We need to help people eat the best possible diet and avoid unhealthy foods.

Rather than attacking farmers, we must appreciate and value their contribution, especially that of family farmers. In addition to providing non-bureaucratic support, the government needs to get out of the way, freeing farmers to get on with farming and not adding to their worries.

An understanding of the challenges and inherent difficulties of farming businesses is essential to good policy. Our aim must be for British farming to be recognised as the best in the world. We must also recognise the great role of supermarkets in feeding the nation and establish better partnerships between producers and retailers.

Looking to the future, we must support farmers in switching from animal to plant-based food production.
